SMART Farming Technology (SFT) Research at UPM started at the turn of the 21st century with the formation of the Precision Farming Engineering R&D (PREFERD) Group. Human capital includes 3 professors, and 10 other researchers with PhDs.
Research for MS and PhD Thesis can be chosen from the following fields of study, viz. Precision Farming Engineering, Agricultural Robotics Engineering, and Irrigation and Drainage Engineering.
Currently SFT research are on Oil Palm and Agriculture, two of the 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs) that will directly and materially contribute a quantifiable amount of economic growth to the Malaysian economy.
SFT research focuses on upstream productivity such as design of machines for mechanizing plantations and automation in water management, seeking best practices to enhance yields and enhance palm oil extraction.
SFT research helps the plantation and agriculture sector through technology to play a more important role in Malaysia’s economic development—providing more knowledgeable agricultural entrepreneurs and farmers, rural employment, uplifting rural incomes and ensuring national food security through technology utilization in agriculture and aquaculture, and increased productivity of ICT enabled farming communities.
